| There is a concept in Judaism against speaking 'Lashon haRah' (lit. bad/evil tongue/language) which is the prohibition against idle gossip/bad-mouthing people.
The Jewish world is a small one in general, but coming together here in Israel, it's even smaller. Get a group of relative strangers together and usually within 5 minutes of playing 'Jewish Geography', you've discovered your six degrees of separation and often it's only 1 or 2 degrees.
And every time that happens, it proves to me that one really shouldn't talk 'Lashon haRah' because you never really know who you're talking TO.
So FaceBook has this feature which shows mutual friends. I was on a friend's page, commenting on her wall when I noticed her husband's name. I also noticed which friends we have in common. Her husband's name was familiar so I clicked on his name and sure enough, we were coworkers back when I was employed by the Jerusalem Post. Some of the mutual friends I understand how we came by (the various Jewish women's boards) and others, I gotta wonder... |
